Sonny Rollins - The Bridge

thecrandallster

Review by Raymond Crandall

The Bridge by Sonny Rollins is a classic jazz album that showcases the musician's incredible talent and versatility. Released in 1962, the album features Rollins on tenor saxophone, accompanied by Jim Hall on guitar, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Ben Riley on drums.

The album opens with the title track, "The Bridge," a haunting and introspective tune that sets the tone for the rest of the album. Rollins' playing is soulful and emotional, and he shows off his impressive technique with a series of virtuosic solos.

Other standout tracks on the album include "God Bless the Child," a beautiful ballad that features Rollins' tender and expressive playing, and "John S," a fast-paced and energetic tune that showcases the band's tight and dynamic interplay.

Summary by Raymond Crandall

The Bridge is a must-have for any jazz fan, and it remains a timeless and influential album to this day. Rollins' playing is simply stunning, and the album is a testament to his mastery of the tenor saxophone and his ability to create music that is both complex and deeply emotional.

La perfezione assoluta
there is clearly a song here. sonny rollins is a hypocrite
The break at 6:00 is outstanding...
It would seem Mr Jim Hall is the subject of some conflicting opinions
Jim Hall plays greatest guitar solo of all time!!!! A perfect mix of chordal textures and single line runs. He was the greatest guitar master of all time!
one of the best jazz albums of all time
I love how compositional Sonny’s solos are. It’s why his solo on St Thomas is one of the only jazz solos I’ve transcribed in full. His ability to build exciting multi-chorus solos around motifs from the melody of whatever song he’s playing never fails to floor me.
Such a charming melody
Perfect ??
Best melody in all of jazz.
Jim Hall is not only overrated. He is embarrassing.
ギター?格好良すぎ、ロリンズ、バップ神、
This puppy is my next transcription project for sure - great tune. Such a great arrangement too
Jim Hall is just amazing in this track
