Raspberries - Starting Over

Review by Curlee Smittie

Starting Over is the sixth studio album by the American power pop band Raspberries. The album, released in 1974, is a great representation of the band's sound and style, and it showcases their ability to create catchy, upbeat songs with a touch of rock and roll edge.

The album opens with the title track, "Starting Over," which sets the tone for the rest of the album with its upbeat tempo and catchy lyrics. The second track, "Go All the Way," is one of the band's most popular songs and has been covered by several other artists. The rest of the album is filled with equally catchy songs such as "I Don't Know What I Want," "Cruisin' Music," and "All Through the Night."

The band's harmonies are a standout feature of the album, with each member contributing to create a rich, layered sound. The instrumentation is also impressive, with guitar riffs and keyboard solos adding depth to the songs.

Summary by Curlee Smittie

Starting Over is a must-listen for fans of power pop and rock and roll. The album's energy and catchy hooks make it a classic of the genre, and it is sure to leave listeners singing along and tapping their feet.

Comments

So much for the power of the press, at least as far as record sales go. Every critic loved it, but apparently no one read the reviews. One of the best pop albums of the seventies, it's disappointing chart performance caused Eric Carmen to go off All By Himself and start writing million selling tripe. Overnight Sensation followed suit on the singles charts, getting outperformed by songs that were absolute trash. If you like power pop, these guys will whet your appetite. There are a couple of weepers, as usual. Starting Over, ironically, and unfortunately, is where the Raspberries came to a Dead Stop.
The more I listen to this song the more I think it has my favorite instrumental intro and outro of all time! The way Scott McCarl's bass guitar begins the outro at 2:50 sounds like Paul McCartney at his very best, and his lead vocal throughout like John Lennon at his very best.
Very Beatlesque
This song should have been the first single released from "Starting Over," paving the way for the follow-up "Overnight Sensation."
John Lennon sound alike Scott McCarl also covered two Beatles sound alike songs -- "This Boy" and "Yes It Is." Both superb!
The Raspberries Play On in 2021
If I didn't know better I could be fooled into thinking this was a Badfinger track.
The Beat is Dwight Yokams Fast As You And Roy Orbison Pretty Woman
I never tire of listening to this wonderful gem--great piece of power pop from a very underated band.
R.I.P. Mike, may ya rest in Heaven, bro!
It’s a hard life, but you play it for laughs
It’s a cold-hearted business, keep away from the traps
And your fingers and your throat get sore
But they’re out there beggin’ for some more

[Chorus] So play on (while the lights shine around your head)
Play on (every night in a different bed)
And the nights … go … on … and on

Get a break and find a place you can hide
‘Cause tonight you’ve got to be a star personified
You’re rushing ’round to get your plane
And it’s back in the bubble again

[Chorus]

Critics comin’ ’cause you’re number one (number one)
Play your hits and all the girls will come
So play on, (play on), play on, (play on), play on, Yeah!

[Solo]

[Chorus]

[Repeat first verse]

The nights go on and on
A Great Band
muy beatle
For me, the Rasps' absolute innacle..
they incorporated some of the guitar from Oh Pretty Woman into this , and the results are of course spectacular .. criminally underrated band to say the least
One of the bands oasis ripped off
yes, that is scott on lead vocals, I use to have the album.
I always felt like Badfinger and the Raspberries had the same feel as The Beatles with their harmonies and solid playing.
