Mahmoud Guinia - À Paris

Review by Jidhu Jose

Mahmoud Guinia's album À Paris is a masterpiece of North African music. The album showcases Guinia's mastery of the guembri, a traditional Moroccan bass instrument, and his ability to blend traditional North African music with contemporary Western styles.

From the opening track "Lalla Mira," Guinia's guembri playing sets the tone for the album, providing a deep, earthy foundation for the swirling, hypnotic melodies of the other instruments. The album's centerpiece, "Moulay Ahmed," features Guinia's vocals soaring over a complex, interlocking rhythm that builds to a frenzied climax.

Throughout the album, Guinia is joined by a talented ensemble of musicians, including saxophonist Steve Shehan and percussionist Karim Ziad. Together, they create a rich tapestry of sound that is at once deeply rooted in tradition and boldly experimental.
