Review by Tiago Buzatto

Cactus Pryor and His Pricklypears have come up with a refreshing album that celebrates the spirit of the American West. Red River Valley Jackass Caravan is a delightful mix of traditional country, bluegrass, and western swing music that showcases the band's virtuosity and Pryor's wit and humor.

The album opens with the title track, a rollicking western swing number that sets the tone for the rest of the album. Pryor's vocals are playful and catchy, and the band's instrumentation is tight and lively. "I'm Gonna Be a Cowboy" is another standout track that features Pryor's signature yodeling and a catchy chorus that will have listeners tapping their toes.

The album also includes several covers of classic country and bluegrass tunes, such as "Orange Blossom Special" and "Foggy Mountain Breakdown." These songs are given fresh arrangements that showcase the band's skill and creativity.

One of the highlights of the album is "The Ballad of Pancho Villa," a humorous retelling of the legendary Mexican revolutionary's exploits. Pryor's storytelling skills are on full display in this track, and the band's instrumentation perfectly captures the spirit of the Mexican countryside.

Notes

Red River Valley is a folk song and cowboy music standard of uncertain origins that has gone by different names. Research speculates that the song was composed at the time of the Wolseley Expedition of 1870 in Manitoba. Great! Used to have a cassette a friend gave me with a whole bunch of Cactus' 78s and also Jesse James & the Boys, good stuff. Never noticed before, right in the fade out when Cactus is calling out the jackass' names he calls two of them "Thermostrock" and "Mortimer". So his catchphrase goes back at least that far, wow!
I Really like this record!
