The Velvet Underground's fourth studio album, VU, is a masterpiece of experimental rock music. Released in 1985, the album features previously unreleased recordings from the band's early years, including tracks recorded with their original drummer, Angus MacLise.
The album opens with the hauntingly beautiful "I Can't Stand It," which showcases Lou Reed's signature deadpan vocals and the band's unique blend of rock, folk, and avant-garde music. Other standout tracks include "Stephanie Says," a melancholic ballad that features Reed's poetic lyrics and John Cale's masterful viola playing, and "Ocean," a hypnotic instrumental piece that builds to a frenzied climax.
Throughout the album, the band's experimental spirit shines through, with tracks like "One of These Days" featuring distorted guitars and dissonant harmonies that push the boundaries of what rock music can be. The album also includes several previously unreleased tracks, such as "Lisa Says" and "We're Gonna Have a Real Good Time Together," which offer a glimpse into the band's early years and show how they evolved into one of the most influential groups in rock history.
