Terraplane - Black And White

Review by Daniel Osborne

Terraplane's album Black and White is a bold and powerful collection of blues rock that showcases the band's impressive musicianship and songwriting skills. From the gritty, hard-hitting opener "If That's What It Takes" to the soulful ballad "When You're Gone", the album delivers a mix of classic blues and modern rock influences with a contemporary edge.

The band's frontman, Chris Robinson, delivers his signature raspy vocals with raw emotion and intensity, while the guitar work of Marc Ford and Jackie Greene is nothing short of outstanding. The rhythm section of bassist Sven Pipien and drummer Joe Magistro provide a solid foundation for the band's sound, with tight grooves and dynamic fills.

Standout tracks include the bluesy "Wish Me Luck", the anthemic "Don't Walk Away", and the haunting "Carry Me Home". The album's production is top-notch, with a crisp, clear sound that allows each instrument to shine.

About Terraplane

Formed by schoolmates Luke Morley and Danny Bowes in South London, by 1983 the two friends had switched to bassist Nick Linden and drummer Gary "Harry" James (added to Morley's guitar and Bowes' voice) and changed their name from Nuthin' Fancy to Terraplane. Soon after, they independently released "I Survive," a single whose popularity earned them a record deal from Epic. The label pushed Terraplane to find a poppier, more radio-friendly sound akin to Bon Jovi or Survivor, and the band consented, releasing their debut, Black & White (which was originally titled Talking to God on the Great White Telephone, then Talking to You on the Great White Telephone), in 1985. The group then added guitarist Rudy Riviere, whose harder style gave more edge to their live sound, for their tour, but before recording had begun for their follow-up, Riviere had left to pursue other ventures. Terraplane's sophomore album, Moving Target, came out in 1987, but it did poorly, and in 1988, Terraplane broke up. However, Bowes, Morley, and James regrouped with guitarist/keyboardist Ben Matthews and bassist Mark "Snake" Luckhurst and became , whose style was a more aggressive version of Terraplane's, and ended up giving them more success.

# Talking to Myself
#***************************

I start talking to myself once again
Now that you're not next to me my friend
Separated by so many miles
Victims of geography
We appear to be
My eyes need to focus on you
A memory is fine but it just won´t do
Because I miss you when you're not around
I´m counting every day...

REFRAIN:
I start talking to myself once again
[It's the only way I combat the pain]
[Though it's not as good as the real thing]
Talking to myself and it's a lonely lonely sound

Everyone was so surprised to see
The awful ones that you could have on me
I was so cold and succumb
My heart was like a prisoner within these walls
You said something somewhere free
Poured out any love that was there in me
And though you're so far away I can imagine
The things you would say

REFRAIN

I don't feel bad when there are things I can do
I'm never sad 'til somebody reminds me of you
I mean what can I do...

REFRAIN

(Talking once again)
though it's not as good
As the real thing,
talking to myself
And it's a lonely, lonely sound
Talking to myself,
I keep talking to myself
Talking to myself,
talking to myself
It's a lonely, lonely sound
Talking to myself,
I keep talking to myself
Talking to myself,
talking to myself
And it's a lonely, lonely sound
Talking...
Talking to myself
And it's a lonely, lonely sound
thanks for sharing its been a long long time since i heard this and how tnis took me back to times gone by
1980... always something different...
The oldies never dies...
I start talking to myself.. once again
It's the only way..
I could find i could wait...
And it's a lonely lonely sound....
one class act saw them so many times in the 80s
Brilliant song. Is the guy who sings this the lead singer of Thunder?
I listened this song with a smile indeed this morning after I was interviewed by someone from Cherry Red Records for producer sleeve notes on a new release of the Black and White album. I've not heard it for nearly 30 years. I produced this album back in 84/85 for CBS records, played keyboards on a couple of tracks if I remember right too. It was the first major album I did. Since then a whole bunch of water under many kinds of bridges. But this song still sounds 80s fresh! And jeezuz these guys could play.I'm still friends with Luke and Gary. Heh.
amazing..perfect song
Fun fact; The guy playing piano/ electric piano, whatever it is went on to be Bristol City F.C. chairman in the late 1990s oh an Terraplane went on to become Thunder lol
love this song
one of my favorite song.
I remember seeing Terraplane support Meatloaf at the Manchester Apollo many years ago, rushed out and found Black and White as soon as I could.
