Stephane Grappelli - Shades Of Django

Review by Ed Darrell

Shades of Django is an album by the legendary jazz violinist, Stephane Grappelli. The album is a tribute to the great guitarist Django Reinhardt, with whom Grappelli formed the quintessential Hot Club of France in the 1930s. The album features a collection of Reinhardt's most famous compositions, including "Minor Swing," "Nuages," and "Djangology."

Grappelli's virtuosity on the violin is on full display throughout the album, as he effortlessly navigates the intricate melodies and complex harmonies of Reinhardt's compositions. The album also features some outstanding performances by the accompanying musicians, including guitarists Martin Taylor and Diz Disley, and bassist Jack Sewing.

What sets Shades of Django apart from other Reinhardt tribute albums is the sheer joy and energy that Grappelli brings to the music. His enthusiasm is infectious, and it's impossible not to be swept up in the sheer exuberance of his playing.

Summary by Ed Darrell

Shades of Django is a wonderful tribute to one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time. It's a must-have for any fan of Reinhardt, Grappelli, or jazz in general.

Comments

A collaboration between Grappelli and the Diz Disley Trio (British) with whom Grappelli toured during the 1990 period. This is an attempt, largely successful, to replicate the Quintette of the Hot Club of France, with the advantage of more modern digital technology. The original recordings of the 1930s are also available in reprocessed form.
