Rather Ripped, the twelfth studio album by Sonic Youth, showcases the band's continued evolution and experimentation with their sound. Released in 2006, the album features a more stripped-down approach with a focus on melody and structure.

The album's opening track, "Reena," sets the tone with its catchy guitar riffs and Kim Gordon's hypnotic vocals. "Incinerate" and "Do You Believe in Rapture?" are standout tracks that demonstrate the band's ability to create memorable hooks while still maintaining their signature noise-rock sound.

Rather Ripped also features some of the band's most introspective and contemplative lyrics to date, particularly on tracks such as "The Neutral" and "Pink Steam." The album's closing track, "Or," is a haunting instrumental that showcases the band's mastery of creating atmospheric soundscapes.

Sonic Youth, initially comprised of guitarist / vocalists Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo, guitarist / bassist / vocalist Kim Gordon and drummer Richard Edson, were formed in New York City in 1981. A product of the No-Wave music scene of the late 1970s, the group had their roots in abrasive, experimental music, with Moore and Ranaldo having previously worked with the experimental composer . Superb. A late-period SY masterpiece that defied expectations and certainly put to rest any lingering doubts about what the band was capable of achieving. Their last couple of albums had been more languid, less dissonant affairs, but here they sound positively ethereal, and the song craft is sturdy enough (and the lyrics equivocal enough) to flourish in the warmer soundscape. Even if some might find the Kim-channeling-Nico shtick a little off-putting, her songs here are so disarming and unpretentious - and just plain good - that she succeeds beautifully. As someone who has always seen her as the band's weak link, I am still floored by her contributions here, especially "The Neutral," which along with "Incinerate," the gorgeous (and irony-free) "Do You Believe in Rapture," and "Pink Stream" are the standouts in a set of low-key gems.
