Chet Baker - Sextet Quartet

Review by Katy Sauer

Sextet Quartet is a remarkable jazz album by the legendary musician, Chet Baker. Released in 1983, the album features some of Baker's most iconic works, brought to life by a team of talented musicians.

The album's standout feature is the perfect blend of Baker's trumpet with the saxophone, bass, drums, and piano. The tracks are a mix of originals and covers, with each one showcasing the musical prowess of the ensemble.

The album opens with "For Minors Only," a fast-paced tune that sets the tone for what's to come. The group then moves on to "Minor Yours," a bluesy track that highlights Baker's smooth trumpet playing. The title track, "Sextet," is a beautiful composition that showcases the ensemble's ability to play as a cohesive unit.

The album's standout track is "How Deep Is the Ocean." Baker's trumpet playing is both haunting and beautiful, and the arrangement perfectly complements his performance. The other tracks on the album are just as impressive, with each one showcasing the ensemble's musical talents.

American jazz trumpeter, singer, composer, and artist. Born: 23 December 1929 in Yale, Oklahoma, USA. Died: 13 May 1988 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands (aged 58). Baker began his career in the early 1950s and played together with and . Unfortunately, his drug addiction hampered his career, including arrests for narcotics. From 1957 on, he had several comebacks with such musicians as , , and Gerry Mulligan with whom he had already recorded. In spite of having his teeth knocked out, Baker recovered and continued to record frequently, especially in live settings, for many different labels, including small groups and fronting large ensembles. From the 1980s until he died, he did a lot of his recordings in Europe.

At the bass: Franco Cerri! It was a mistake...the real name is Franco Cerri, one of the most important jazz guitarist here in Italy. In this LP he played the double bass.
Awesome!!!
Chet Baker (trumpet); Clauco Masetti (alto saxophone); Gianno Basso (tenor saxophone); Renato Sellani (piano); Franco Serri (bass); Gene Victory (drums).
@peaceman3000 Yes.. Its Chet Baker in Milan :)
nice one, any info for it?
Chet was a bad ass....play or sing.
It makes me cry with joy every time I listen to it, always.
This guy had a hard life with addiction and his talent was superior at the time. Love his stuff.
Meravigliosa, la versione più bella!
JAZZ STANDARDS. THIS IS THE CD TO GET. 1959.
Chet sings as well as his trumpet playing. And that makes him a genius and icon of "White Jazz"!! Did I just say that? Well you dudes know what I mean.
Wonderfull !!!
I had no idea that Chet was that good until recently. Unfortunately, the demons that affected Charlie Parker took over.
That bass is HUGE !
Amazing song!!!!
On listening I hear trumpet, alto, tenor. Good blending of horns
Who are the band members?
He also made some great albums with Bob Brookmeyer
Is there a baritone sax in the mix? Gerry Mulligan?
