Red Garland - All Kinds Of Weather

Review by Pradeep

All Kinds Of Weather by Red Garland is a delightful album that showcases the pianist's exceptional talent and versatility. Released in 1958, the album features a mix of jazz standards and original compositions, all of which are played with impeccable skill and finesse.

The album opens with the title track, "All Kinds Of Weather," a lively and upbeat tune that sets the tone for the rest of the record. Garland's piano playing is crisp and precise, and he is joined by a talented group of musicians who provide excellent support throughout the album.

Other standout tracks include "What Is There To Say," a slow and soulful ballad that allows Garland to showcase his more introspective side, and "Blues In The Closet," a bluesy number that features some impressive solos from the entire band.

Notes

  • Recorded in November of 1958, All Kinds Of Weather finds Red Garland heading up one of several late-fifties trio sessions at the Rudy Van Gelder studio in Hackensack, NJ. As always, the trio is formed by Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. By the time this album was released these three men were intimately acquainted with each other, having performed and recorded together on numerous occasions, and it shows. Using ‘the weather’ as a common theme, this exceptional trio seamlessly performs standards like George Gershwin’s “Summertime” (from Porgy & Bess), “Stormy Weather” (originally written for Cab Calloway), and the classic Christmas tune, “Winter Wonderland”. Just one in a string of memorable late-fifties sides by Garland for Prestige.
