Stan Freberg - John And Marsha

Review by Ana Maria Ibáñez

John And Marsha is an iconic comedy album by Stan Freberg that has entertained audiences since its release in 1951. The album features a series of hilarious skits that poke fun at various aspects of American culture and society, from advertising and politics to family life and popular music.

One of the standout skits on the album is the title track, which features Freberg's deadpan delivery of the names "John" and "Marsha" in a variety of contexts, accompanied by a haunting musical score. The skit has become a classic example of Freberg's unique brand of humor, which blends satire, parody, and absurdity in a way that is both clever and silly.

Another highlight of the album is the skit "Elderly Man River," which parodies the classic song "Ol' Man River" from the musical Show Boat. In this version, Freberg sings about an old man who is too feeble to row a boat, but still manages to get around by using a walker. The skit is a hilarious commentary on the challenges of aging, and is sure to resonate with anyone who has ever dealt with the frustrations of growing old.

I have this vinil 78 /capitol 6920)
One of the rarities...a straight performance and not a touch of comedy/humor to be heard. I still liked the recording although it doesn't feature any of his trademark comedy. To be honest I was expecting to hear a break in the recording and hear Stan start to make jokes or whatever...but that never happened.
Rest in peace spoof meister Stan. - you leave us laughs forever :)
Freberg is still alive and just turned 90.
I haven't heard this song since about 1961. I love it. Glad I found it.
Now there's a dandy line!
