Review by R.M. Engelhardt Poet Author Writer

Poing's latest album is a masterful work of experimental music that pushes the boundaries of what is possible with traditional instruments. The trio of Rolf-Erik Nystrøm on saxophone, Frode Haltli on accordion, and Håkon Thelin on double bass create a sound that is both intricate and playful, incorporating elements of free jazz, classical music, and avant-garde improvisation.

From the opening track, "Naboen," with its swirling rhythms and complex interplay between the instruments, to the hauntingly beautiful "Kjerringa med staven," which features Nystrøm's soaring saxophone over Haltli's delicate accordion, the album is a journey through a world of sound that is both familiar and strange.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Oblivion," a reimagining of the classic tango by Astor Piazzolla. Poing's version is stripped down and raw, with Nystrøm's saxophone taking the lead and Haltli and Thelin providing a sparse, haunting accompaniment.

About Poing

POING started playing together in 1999, and has since then been a interesting ensemble for contemporary music in Scandinavia. They started out playing music by young Norwegian composers on clubs and festivals in Scandinavia. The repertoire has been extended to include new works from more established composers from all parts of the world, as well as improvised music, Kurt Weill or whatever tune the POING wants to play. POING has visited large music festivals as well as clubs in Europe, China and Japan. They have also toured Japan and China several times. This has led to a cooperation with the Japanese composers Sachiyo Tsurumi, Hiroyuki Yamamoto, Hideki Kozakura and Takmi Ikeda, and the Chinese composer CHAN Hig-Yan.
