The Mutantes were a Brazilian psychedelic rock band that emerged in the late 1960s, and their 1972 album "Personalidade" is widely regarded as one of their finest works. The album features a blend of rock, jazz, and Brazilian folk music, with lyrics that mix surrealism, social commentary, and personal introspection.
From the opening track "Top Top" to the closing "Ave Genghis Khan," "Personalidade" takes the listener on a wild and unpredictable journey. The Mutantes' trademark sound is in full force, with Sergio Dias' guitar wizardry, Rita Lee's powerful vocals, and Arnaldo Baptista's experimental keyboards and bass lines. The album also features guest musicians such as João Donato, Azymuth, and Hermeto Pascoal, adding to the eclectic mix of styles.
Standout tracks include "Jogo de Calçada," a funky and playful tune with a catchy chorus, and "Tecnicolor," a dreamy ballad that showcases Rita Lee's emotional range. "Cantor de Mambo" is a jazzy number with a political edge, while "Balada do Louco" is a haunting and cinematic epic that tells the story of a madman.
