Michael Garrison - Prisms

Review by Deddy Boen

Prisms by Michael Garrison is a unique and captivating album that showcases the artist's skill in creating electronic music. The album is a blend of ambient and experimental sounds that take the listener on a journey through different sonic landscapes.

The opening track, "Prisms," sets the tone for the rest of the album with its dreamy, atmospheric soundscapes. The use of synthesizers and electronic drums creates a sense of otherworldliness that is both mesmerizing and hypnotic.

As the album progresses, tracks like "Eclipse" and "Beyond the Cosmic Horizon" explore more experimental sounds, with distorted synthesizers and glitchy beats creating a sense of chaos and unpredictability.

Despite the experimental nature of the album, there are moments of beauty and serenity, such as the track "Nebulae," which features soft, ethereal synthesizers that evoke a sense of calm and tranquility.

  • This german version comes without the french distribution code on the rear cover and is therefore similar to that version. It has on the other hand the writing "Vermietung, Ausführung, Sendung vorbehalten. Ariola-Eurodisc GmbH., München" instead of "All copyrights in the recording works..." on the lower rim of the center labels and is therefore much similar to that version.

  • Differences to similar releases:
  • Prisms is pressed by DADC. Released on the same label but with different artwork on CD face and booklet rear.
  • The track order on this CD release is slightly different from the original LP release in 1981:
  • Track 3 'Tranquility Rush' is a previously unreleased bonus track replacing the originally released LP track 'Discovery'.
  • Track 5 'Motion Fascination' was originally released only on the cassette version of Prisms as last track on MC side 2 after 'Lasers'. This track originally was part of the Point Of Impact album WS112883 but the version used for Prisms seems to be slightly sped up.
  • Track 9 'The Runners Theme' is a previously unreleased bonus track inserted in the original LP running order.
  • The track 'Discovery' that was originally released on LP as track A3 is missing on the CD release. Instead, it ended up as a bonus track on the Point Of Impact CD release in 1993.
  • Incorrect track durations as printed on this release:
  • Track 1: 8:05
  • Track 2: 1:50
  • Track 3: 5:02
  • Track 4: 4:22
  • Track 5: 3:27
  • Track 6: 4:16
  • Track 7: 1:52
  • Track 8: 5:45
  • Track 9: 7:02
  • Track 10: 3:54
  • All titles recorded at Snowcrest Studios, located somewhere in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon.
  • Contact: Windspell Music
  • 1293 N.W. Wall, Suite 1515
  • Bend, Oregon 97701 USA
  • Originally released on the same label in 1991.
  • Some or all copies of this version has a photocopied tray insert.
  • Ariola-Eurodisc-Benelux N.V. Haarlem
  • Made in Germany
  • B2 on cover: Melt Down
  • B3 on cover: Pre Dawn Flight
  • Listening to the original master tapes, the vinyl album was apparently cut at the wrong speed, about three semitones below the original pitch -- which makes the tracks sound a bit dull and unnaturally slow by comparison. Whether this was done deliberately to extend the otherwise rather short playing time, or whether this was an error by the engineer operating the lathe, is unclear.
  • This version distinguishes by a MISSING french distribution code on rear underneath cat.

About Michael Garrison

Michael Garrison was a synthesizer player from Oregon, USA. He was born on November 28, 1956 in Roseburg, Oregon and died on March 24, 2004 in Bend, Oregon. At the age of 13 he wrote his first song and later, during his musical study at the Idaho University, he formed the basic for the first release on his own label , later known as . The original work of his 1st album was titled "In The Regions Of Sunreturn and Beyond" and based on the expeditions of Voyager 1 and 2. But when he managed to get a contract with in 1980 the title changed to "In The Regions Of Sunreturn" and so he became also known in Europe. His style was typical strong sequences with monstrous solos played with various electronic instruments on top. Often a real wall-of-sound experience. He was strongly influenced by the European innovators of Electronic Music, like , and . After his early death, fellow-musicians united to publish a tribute album, "To The Sky And Beyond The Stars."
