Review by Jennifer Abbey

Boogie-woogie enthusiasts will find much to appreciate in Meade 'Lux' Lewis' 1972 album, Boogies Blues. The pianist, who was one of the leading figures in the genre, delivers a collection of lively, foot-tapping tunes that showcase his virtuosic playing and deep understanding of the boogie-woogie tradition.

The album opens with the rollicking "Honky Tonk Train Blues," a classic boogie-woogie number that sets the tone for what's to come. Lewis' fingers fly across the keyboard, producing a cascade of notes that evoke the chugging of a locomotive. Other highlights include "Chicago Flyer," a fast-paced tune that showcases Lewis' ability to create intricate rhythms, and "Melancholy Blues," a slower, more introspective piece that displays his sensitive side.

Throughout the album, Lewis is joined by a group of talented musicians, including drummer Panama Francis and bassist Milt Hinton. Their contributions add depth and texture to the music, creating a rich, layered sound that's a joy to listen to.
