Couldn’t begin to count the times my friends and I saw these guys. My friend Kurt and I even conned our way backstage of the universal amphitheater in LA pretending to deliver pizza for to them.
Quit smoking a week ago & thought of this song.
I worked for their manager, before Morgan Creek, Gabe Katz was it? They were a really fun band and I think underrated. Fun to see this stuff on youtube. They were just starting to come up. JBJ and Louis were there...It was right around the time Hillel of the Chili Peppers passed away.
Still gives me chills.. one of my favorite bands of the early 90’s... saw them several times in LA.
Next Year will be the 20th anniversary of Mary´s Danish. Drummer JBJ joined Mary´s in Feb-Mar of 89´
They screwed over their first manager--Jonathan Schweid-- very publicly and it was one of the factors that led to his death at age 23. A terrible shame all around. What a grreat band. I used to do Score The Clubs for the L.A. Weekly 89-91 and I could not get enough of them. I loved Elvis's New Suit. It's so cool to see them again. Fabulous!
Yeah, I recommend "Circa" as well. You cannot go wrong with a song titled "These Are All The Shapes Nevada Could Have Been". Plus, "Yellow Creep Around" and "Cover Your Face". Must-have songs.
Try "There Goes the Wondertruck" (where most of the songs posted are from), or Circa.
They were basically screwed by their label, Morgan Creek. There's a great article in the LA Weekly from 1999 that goes into detail of what happened. If you Google "The life and premature death of Mary's Danish," you should be able to find it.
They rocked. Way ahead of their time.
