Mainliner - Mellow Out

Review by ingo luederitz

Mainliner's latest album, Mellow Out, is a masterclass in experimental rock. The trio, consisting of guitarist Kawabata Makoto, bassist/vocalist Kawabe Taigen, and drummer Koji Shimura, have crafted a collection of songs that are both entrancing and exploratory.

The album opens with "Revelation Space," a sprawling track that sets the tone for the rest of the album. The band's signature sound is on full display, with Makoto's guitar work weaving in and out of Taigen's basslines and Shimura's steady drumming. The track builds to a frenzied crescendo before fading out into the more subdued "Blues for the Black."

Throughout Mellow Out, Mainliner proves that they are not afraid to take risks. "Mellow Down" features a spoken-word section that adds an eerie element to the already haunting track. "Cave in the Mind" is a slow-burning instrumental that showcases Makoto's mastery of the guitar.

The album's standout track is "Asphyxia," which features guest vocals from fellow Japanese musician and collaborator Kiki Hitomi. Her ethereal voice adds a new dimension to the track, which is both dreamy and disorienting.
