Léo Delibes - Sylvia

Review by Valentin Dedu

Sylvia is an album by French composer Léo Delibes, released in 1876. It features the music from the ballet of the same name, which tells the story of Sylvia, a nymph who falls in love with a mortal shepherd.

The album is a beautiful showcase of Delibes' talent for composing ballet music. The melodies are graceful and elegant, with a lightness that captures the whimsical nature of the story. From the opening bars of the overture, the listener is swept away into a world of fantasy and romance.

The orchestration is also impressive, with a wide range of instruments used to create a rich and varied sound. The strings are particularly effective, providing a lush backdrop for the melodies to shine.

One standout track is the famous "Pizzicato," which features a playful and rhythmic plucking of the strings that perfectly captures the light-hearted nature of the ballet. Another highlight is the "Valse lente," a tender and romantic waltz that showcases Delibes' gift for melody.
