Mongo Santamaria - Afro Roots

Review by John Walters

Afro Roots is an exceptional album by the legendary Cuban percussionist, Mongo Santamaria. Released in 1972, this album is a perfect blend of Afro-Cuban rhythms, jazz, and funk. The album features an impressive lineup of musicians, including Hubert Laws on flute, Sonny Fortune on saxophone, and Ray Maldonado on trumpet.

The opening track, "Mazacote," sets the tone for the album with its infectious rhythm and lively percussion. "O Mi Shango" is another standout track, with its funky bassline and catchy melody. The album also features some slower, more introspective tracks, such as "Afro Blue" and "Los Conguitos."

Santamaria's skill as a bandleader and percussionist shines throughout the album. His use of congas, bongos, and timbales creates a rhythmic foundation that is impossible to resist. The other musicians on the album are equally impressive, with each solo adding to the overall energy and groove of the music.
