Living Colour - Ausländer

Review by Akira Hayasaka

The album Ausländer by Living Colour is a powerful and evocative work that showcases the band's signature blend of hard rock, funk, and social commentary. From the opening track "Freedom of Expression (F.O.X.)" to the closing "Two Sides," the album is a tour de force of musical virtuosity and political activism.

Living Colour's musicianship is on full display throughout the album, with Vernon Reid's guitar work standing out as particularly impressive. The band's rhythms are tight and infectious, and Corey Glover's vocals are as powerful and emotive as ever. The album's production is also top-notch, with a crisp and clear sound that allows every instrument to shine.

But what really sets Ausländer apart is its social commentary. The album addresses a wide range of issues, from police brutality and systemic racism ("Program") to the refugee crisis and xenophobia ("Ausländer"). The lyrics are thoughtful and incisive, and the band's passion for social justice is palpable throughout.

Living Colour is an American rock band from New York City, formed in 1984. Led by guitarist Vernon Reid, the bands lineup solidified in the mid-80's w/ Corey Glover (vocals), Will Calhoun (drums) and Muzz Skillings (bass). Stylistically, the band's music is a creative fusion influenced by free jazz, funk, hard rock and heavy metal. Their lyrics range from the personal to the political, in some of the latter cases attacking Eurocentrism and racism in America. The bands debut album, Vivid, was released in 1988 on Epic Records. The album reached #6 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart and was later certified double platinum by the RIAA. It featured Cult of Personality, a #13 hit on the Billboard 200 Singles chart as well as the Top 40 hit, Glamour Boys. Cult of Personality went on to earn the band their first Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. In 1990 the band's second full-length album, Time's Up, was released and reached #13 on the Billboard 200 while certifying gold. It won a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Album and featured guest appearances by Queen Latifah, Little Richard, Doug E. Fresh, and Maceo Parker. Living Colour released the 6-song EP, "Biscuits" which coincided with the inaugural Lollapalooza tour in the summer of 1991. Skillings left the band in the summer of 1992, replaced by session veteran and Sugarhill Records bass player Doug Wimbish. Stain, their third LP, was released in 1993 by Epic. Reaching #26 on the Billboard 200, the album had a much heavier and aggressive sound, containing elements of thrash metal and industrial music while receiving a Grammy nomination for 'Leave It Alone'. After a split in 1995, Living Colour returned in December 2000 and began recording Collideøscope. Released in 2003, the album featured aggressive lyrics, with many of the songs about the September 11 attacks. It also contained cover versions of AC/DC's Back in Black and The Beatles' Tomorrow Never Knows. Their first release on Megaforce Records, The Chair in the Doorway, was issued in 2009 and reached #159 on the Billboard 200 charged by the single 'Behind The Sun' In 2013, the band celebrated the 25th anniversary of 'Vivid' w/ a world tour crossing North and South Americas, Europe, and Japan, including the Soundwave festival in Australia. The root of Living Colour's next album, came from a performance of Robert Johnson's "Preachin' Blues" at the 100th Anniversary Birthday celebration at the legendary Apollo in New York City. Released on September 8, 2017, Shade is the sound of a band coming to terms with its shadows and light, says founder Vernon Reid. From the blue pulpit of Robert Johnson to the mean red streets of Brooklyn... Shade is the next chapter of a unique American journey.

The bass line is so fucking great.
Amo este himno antifascista
Acredito que essa linha de baixo serviu bastante de referência para a banda Meshuggah! As influências claramente do Meshuggah vem do jazz e Funk Metal! Muito amor Livinha colour ♥️♥️????
This is a GOOD THEME ????????????
The drums are killing ?
grandissimi
Reminds me a bit of Sevendust.
toca la guitarra
The world needs this constantly.. sadly.. brilliant music though.
BASS so insane. Power groove?
The number tattooed on the lady's arm - such a powerful image, (actually made me cry a bit). So sad the human race still has elements that carry on with the racist bullsh*t and perpetuate hatred. To quote a lyric from another band (James, the song "Many Faces") - "There's only one human race, many faces, we all belong here".
2021 and this song is still so relevant!
In your Face Intelligence
good song but what is the message supposed to be? "everything that I want, isnt it everything that you got?" lol, my ancestors didnt work their asses off just to give everything to someone who comes uninvited with an open hand...
Such a timeless band, still sounds fresh.
Kick ass group
Muito foda essa banda
and again now and then.
war and poverty create exodus - "hatered and fear is the language i know"
as long as we hate and fear each other is actual,
hope that one day we say "oh god what a smash great song about our history"
...i hope
Where are they now? The world needs them now more than ever!!!
This song now in 2020...
Great Song from Living Colour-Ausländer ??? #FalkoDahlke #Braunschweig #Germany
Love It...
!Antifascista Siempre!
Greetings from Berlin
If only those roving gangs of motorcyclists would stop it!!!
Their best song, their best album, their best video. Fucking great band all the way around.
In a new place, in a strange land
An undone new world, not a part of the plan
Hatred and fear is the language I know
Out of my home, out of control
Everything that I want, isn't it everything that you've got?
Everything that I want, isn't it everything that you've got?
How much more do you think I can take?
I yield to your smile, a victims mistake
I don't want your life, Ive got my own needs
A life of my own, a chance to be free
Everything that I want, isn't it everything that you've got?
Everything that I want, isn't it everything that you've got?
Everything that I want, isn't it everything that you've got?
Everything that I want, isn't it everything that you've got?
Everything that I want, isn't it everything that you've got?
Everything that I want, isn't it everything that you've got?
This song is very grunge influenced
