Lena Horne - Songs By Burke And Van Heusen

Review by Aritra Roy

Lena Horne's album, Songs By Burke And Van Heusen, is a stunning showcase of her incredible vocal talent. The album, released in 1959, features some of the most beloved songs from the legendary songwriting team of Johnny Burke and Jimmy Van Heusen.

Horne's smooth and sultry voice is perfectly suited for the romantic ballads and upbeat swing numbers on the album. Her rendition of "But Beautiful" is particularly memorable, with her emotive vocals perfectly capturing the yearning and longing of the song's lyrics.

The album is also notable for its excellent arrangements, which perfectly complement Horne's vocals. The arrangements, by the likes of Billy May and Marty Paich, are lush and sophisticated, with a strong emphasis on orchestral strings and brass.

merci pour cette interprétation avec le verse
Just what is your style? You must've been born later, say, the 50s.
something's wrong with either the remastering of her work or with the original masters. There's too much distortion. I've noticed this on other RCA reissues.
Lena Horne, one of the greats. This is the best rendition of this song I have ever heard.
I remember when I was young,Lena Horne was the first time I really noticed style on
a performer. She was guesting on some variety show, and had on a green chiffon gown.
Interesting that in my youth, I thought the Burkes and Van Heusens would be about foreover.  I was wrong.  That time has come and gone and won't be seen again.  Isn't it interesting that music seems to fit a certain time?  Van Heusen and Burke wouldn't succeed in today's climate of confusion and mass murders.  But Betty Hutton's description of those days was spot on.  It was an age of GREAT writers, the list much too long to cite here.  "Polka dots and meanbeams" and I happen to be old, old friends.
She was SO RIGHT for her time, the 20s, 30s, and 40s. She held her own in beauty to all. The sad part is that we didn't see her entire repertory, given the unfortunate times of the moment. I heard her sing this classic at the old Coconut Grove where mobster Mickey Cohen had a front row seat directly in front of Horne, who was backed up by Chico Hamilton that evening.
