Have loved Dakota Staton since I was 12 - 72 now.  Her songs were in the only key I could sing on...my fave Simple Life....I can still belt that one out and I can't carry sheet music in a bag, let along carry a tune!  But her songs elevate my performance!

Hahahahaha
Met Dakota many times in the 70sm, hanging out at Richard's Lounge in Lakewood NJ. Dakota's trademark tune was "The Late Late Show."
i should have known

Το 1957 έσκασε στη σκηνή της τζαζ με το “The Late, Late Show” πρώτο της άλμπουμ κι έσπασε τα κοντέρ.
Dakota and I go way back and I enjoy her and her voice since then. She is so sassy.
Rip. Brynda
maybe the most beautiful song ever recorded
she is one of the Queen that Bring memories back she one great legend of her time Her spirit is still here with us god rest her in peace Queen is for every Amen Ra,
Loved the original by Al kooper and Blood Sweat and Tears in 1968, and then donny hathaway, Tina Britt and now another great version. Al wrote a classic.
LISTENED TO HER WHILE I WAS IN THE ARMY,THE BEST
Dakota does an excellent job on this song BUT I'm so used to Donny Hathaway's version with horns in the background and then there's the BIg O's Version but of course I'm a male and many times we don't listen to our woman we wants them to listen to us, so when Donny or Otis sings this song it's almost like me telling it to my woman and not listening to her telling me the same
I remember her from the late 50s and early 60s but she seemed to drop of the charts and public notice in the mid 60s.  Perhaps her adoption of Islam and name change may have contributed to the down grade in her public profile.  Dunno for sure. But I am in general agreement with the commentators below that she had a very good voice and expressive manner in her performance.  In my mind, she was always an under-rated Blues Queen.

I just might add that this splendid song has great orchestration which helps bring out the true beauty of her voice.
the soul...thanks
Nice version!
Released in 1973.
"In The Night" was the only 78 vinyl record I owned in 1959, and I used to play it endlessly in my hotel room in St.Germain des Près while I was painting . A marvelous voice ! Source of inspiration .
This is one of my favorite records, and she really kills this song. A truly original artist. One of the greats. Thanks for posting.
this is really great, up there with stuff like penny blues by kim weston, thanks!!!
I grew up listening to her old vinyl, my dad who is 84 now , remembers her from back home in Pittsburg, and he use to tell me how this little girl of 5 or 6 they would put up on a bar stool and she would sing her heart out. It was really cool of you to post this! Thank you so much!
I own just about all of her recordings (vinyl & CD) & I have seen her in person. She was a phenomenal jazz singer! It's a shame that more wasn't written about her when she died.
