Review by Jim Wright

The album Simple Symphony Prelude Fuge for 18 Strings Violin Concerto by Benjamin Britten is a stunning collection of classical pieces that showcase the composer's mastery of orchestration and musical form. The album features three major works, each of which is performed with precision and passion by the musicians of the London Symphony Orchestra.

The first piece, Simple Symphony, is a delightful and whimsical work that draws on Britten's early experiences as a composer. The four movements of the symphony are filled with playful melodies, intricate rhythms, and lush harmonies that keep the listener engaged from start to finish.

The second piece, Prelude and Fugue for 18 Strings, is a more serious and contemplative work that showcases Britten's skill as a contrapuntalist. The Prelude is a hauntingly beautiful piece that builds to a powerful climax, while the Fugue is a complex and intricate work that demands the utmost precision from the performers.

The final piece, the Violin Concerto, is a virtuosic work that features the solo violinist Joshua Bell. Bell's performance is nothing short of breathtaking, as he navigates the complex and demanding passages with ease and grace. The concerto is a showcase for Britten's ability to blend the soloist and orchestra into a seamless whole, creating a work that is both technically challenging and emotionally compelling.

About Benjamin Britten

British composer, conductor, and pianist. Born: November 22, 1913, in Lowestoft, UK - died: December 04, 1976, in Aldeburgh, UK. He showed talent from an early age, and first came to public attention with the a cappella choral work A Boy Was Born in 1934. With the premiere of his opera Peter Grimes in 1945, he leapt to international fame. For the next fifteen years he devoted much of his compositional attention to writing operas, establishing him as one of the leading 20th century figures in this genre. Britten's interests as a composer were wide-ranging; he produced important music in such varied genres as orchestral, choral, solo vocal (much of it written for the tenor Peter Pears), chamber and instrumental, as well as film music. He also took a great interest in writing music for children and amateur performers, and was a fine pianist and conductor. One of Britten's most important works, The War Requiem was completed 20 December 1961, and first performed 30 May 1962. Britten received many prizes and honors, including becoming a Companion of Honour in 1952, and a member of the Order of Merit in 1965.
