Barney Kessel - Barney Kessel

Review by Matt Rickman

Barney Kessel's self-titled album is a masterpiece of jazz guitar. Released in 1958, the album showcases Kessel's virtuosity and versatility as a musician. The album features a mix of original compositions and standards, all of which are performed with impeccable skill and style.

Kessel's playing is smooth and melodic, with a clear sense of phrasing and dynamics. His solos are inventive and expressive, with a wide range of tonal colors and textures. He is equally adept at playing fast, intricate lines and slow, soulful ballads.

The album's standout tracks include "Jordu," a bebop classic with a catchy melody and intricate changes, and "Stairway to the Stars," a beautiful ballad that showcases Kessel's sensitive side. The album also features a swinging rendition of "On a Clear Day," a popular tune from the musical "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever."

Comments

Should've named it, "Arnold Ross & Bud Shank, Lullaby of Birdland" way better phrasing & articulation during the piano & flute solos than Barney
Walk through a city park on a warm spring day while listening to this, you'll start waving to people you don't know.
Beautiful block chords of Arnold Ross and flute artistry of Bud Shank.Kessel great on typical West coast guitar style....five stars
