About Bach Organ Walter Kraft

Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21, 1685 in Eisenach, Thuringia, Germany. A prolific German composer and organist, his sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra and solo instruments drew together the strands of the baroque genre and brought it to its ultimate maturity. Although he introduced no new forms, he enriched the prevailing German style with a robust contrapuntal technique, a control of harmonic and motivic organisation from the smallest to the largest scales, and the adaptation of rhythms and textures from abroad, particularly Italy and France. Many people consider him to be the greatest Baroque composer, and one of the greatest composers of all time. Revered for their intellectual depth, technical command and artistic beauty, J.S. Bach's works include the Brandenburg concertos, the keyboard suites and partitas, the Mass in B Minor, the St. Matthew Passion, The Musical Offering, The Art of Fugue and a large number of cantatas, of which about 220 survive. He died on July 28, 1750. Some of his sons also became composers - , , and .

I bought the VOX BOX in the mid-60s, which included the Master Kraft playing the Bach D Minor at Ebermunster. I was enthalled and am to this day!! Such a brilliant and tonally splendid rendition of the Bach. No one has ever surpassed this recording!!!
This is the best version I have heard of the most famous of all organ works. Kraft takes his time in the final section, without the needless speed other players often rush into, allowing all the notes to speak. He also avoids adding any unnecessary trills or baroque flourishes. The definitive version, 56 years and still going strong!
When I was a child, this was the very first organ recording I owned (given to me by my mother). Now, these many years later, it is still the first performance I think of when someone mentions the Toccata and Fugue in D and, especially, the Pastorale in F. One of my all-time favorites.
The soft-focused sound of this instrument is quite impressive.
This is a great performance on the Silbermann Organ.  Thanks David . Good weekend to you..... Rosa
