Wendy Oldfield - Holy Water

Review by John Tiedemann

Holy Water, the latest album by Wendy Oldfield, is a soulful and introspective collection of songs that showcases the South African singer-songwriter's considerable talents. From the opening track, "Holy Water," with its haunting melody and evocative lyrics, to the closing song, "Goodbye," which is a touching tribute to her late mother, Oldfield's music is both deeply personal and universally relatable.

Throughout the album, Oldfield's voice is the centerpiece, as she delivers each song with a raw and emotional intensity that draws the listener in. Whether she's singing about love, loss, or the struggles of everyday life, her voice is always authentic and heartfelt.

The production on Holy Water is also top-notch, with lush arrangements that complement Oldfield's vocals without overwhelming them. The album's standout tracks include "The Light," a soaring ballad about hope and redemption, and "Fireflies," a catchy pop song with a driving beat and an infectious chorus.

About Wendy Oldfield

Wendy was studying at Barkley House Teachers Training College (Cape Town) to "give herself something to do whilst waiting for a career in music to happen" when she was asked to audition for a rock band in 1983. She was asked whether she shaved her legs, dyed her hair black, and since the guys in the band were "pretty fixated" on her boobs, she got the gig. The Sweatband moved to Jo'burg and had a good measure of success before Wendy Oldfield decided to pursue a solo career in November 1988, also with a degree of success. Since then she's moved towards a more world music oriented direction, living in Knysna with husband and children.n
