Review by Kelly Rai

Live At Montreux 1996, the album by Wayne Shorter, is a captivating and masterful performance that showcases the jazz icon's talent and versatility. Recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the album features Shorter's quintet, which includes Danilo Perez on piano, John Patitucci on bass, Brian Blade on drums, and Alex Acuna on percussion.

From the opening track, "On The Milky Way Express," it's clear that Shorter and his band are in top form. The musicians play with a sense of urgency and intensity that draws the listener in and keeps them engaged throughout the album. Shorter's saxophone playing is particularly impressive, as he effortlessly weaves intricate melodies and soaring solos into each song.

The album features a mix of Shorter's original compositions and jazz standards, such as "Footprints" and "Speak No Evil." Each song is given a fresh and dynamic interpretation, with the band members showcasing their individual talents while also working together seamlessly as a unit.

One of the highlights of the album is the epic 23-minute performance of "Atlantis," which builds to a thrilling climax as Shorter and his bandmates push the boundaries of jazz improvisation. The audience's enthusiastic response is a testament to the power and virtuosity of the performance.

3:01
violently beatiful !
sorry to go on. But the amazing thing is, even though they are playing it so fast, it sounds less mechanical than the original. How is that possible? These musicians are the best there is
All hail the mighty Alphonso, so good to see him with Wayne again. Great as Jaco was, I loved Alphonso in Weather Report (as did Zawinul, who hated to lose him. Still, things turned out, um, pretty good lol)
Holy shit, the tempo!! This tune is hard enough (I know, I've played it live in a cold sweat), but the tempo here has to be 12 clicks faster than the original. My goodness gracious
I love wayne shorter
I saw this group in Chicago in '97 - incredible!
Out of this world!!! This is a glimpse into a whole other realm of potential for human beings.
"Endangered SPICIES!!!|"
Very spicy indeed
Rodney Holmes on Drums for sure!!! Can always tell by his crazy set up!!!
Cannot find a live version of this track to buy, only the synth version from the 80s and that is horrendous compared to this live version.
And I came here from Spalding version. But this is even better
This is some of the best playing I've ever heard from Alphonso Johnson! Everybody's blowin!
That Tempo is NUTZ ! Thanks Mr. Gilmore
rodney holmes was the shit in the 90s..where is he now...??
Best version so far
This is so powerful!!!
This has to be one of THE most ridiculous performances in the history of man. Notice the bass and drum lines. Unbelievable!!! Thanks Wayne!!!
What a groove!
Rodney Holmes a monster..
Alphonso, whoa!
obra-prima
