Notes
Producer's note:
The aim of this Mosaic Select was to present the best examples of small group boogie woogie and blues piano, recorded for Victor/Bluebird and the Columbia family of labels from 1935 to the recording ban of 1942. Because of the music's overwhelming popularity during this period, a great deal of boogie woogie found its way into big band arrangements; because of space limitations and musical direction, we have decided not to include these recordings.
Joe Turner and Cripple Clarence Lofton were chosen to represent the blues material in this package. It was a natural to include Joe Turner, who is accompianied here by Meade Lux Lewis, Albert Ammons and Pete Johnson. Lofton's inclusion shows a masterful blues pianist and singer backed by legendary guitarist Big Bill Broonzy. Initially, the thought was to also include recordings made by Champion Jack Dupree and Jimmy Rushing. However, Dupree's output had been recently covered in a Sony Legacy CD and Rushing's small group efforts will be part of a Mosaic Select on Lester Young.
Unlike some other Mosaic packages, this set is presented out of chronological order. By doing this, we were able to weave together the solo piano, blues and small group boogie woogie and make it a more listenable set.
the Mosaic Select Boogie Woogie Blues Piano album is a must-have for any fan of the genre. With its impressive lineup of pianists and its diverse selection of tracks, it is sure to provide hours of entertainment and inspiration.
