Notes

  • Produced for the Puerto Rico Council, U.S. Navy League by A&R Recording, New York.
  • Album jacket design & production by Goal Productions, Washington, D.C.
  • [LINER]
  • The United States Navy Steel Band, headquartered in San Juan, Puerto Rico, is assigned to the Commander Caribbean Sea Frontier and Commandant Tenth Naval District.
  • Since its inception in 1957 the band has traveled over 750,000 miles and has made over 6,000 crowd-pleasing performances throughout the world. They have played before three Presidents, national television audiences, and crowds at both the Brussel's and New York World Fairs.
  • This band's greatest strength lies in its ability to perform a wide range of musical styles-from calypso to classical. It this album, the Navy Steel Band demonstrates its versatility by playing calypso tunes, music of the now generation, and a trio of classical works-all played on drums fashioned from 55-gallon oil barrels.
  • Steel bands, like much of their music, originated in Trinidad. Two of the selections on this album won the Calypso competition in Trinidad, both "Mama This is Mas" and "Miss Tourist" won the contest for composer-and calypso great - Lord Kitchner.
  • The United States Navy Steel Band, "Matilda/Marianne" is a medley of two old favorite calypsos made popular in the late fifties by Harry Belafonte and "You Sweeten Me" is a new arrangement of a tune first recorded by the Merrymen from enchanting Barbados.
  • The theme of the band, Blowin' In The Wind, is the Peter, Paul and Mary folk song set to a calypso beat.
  • The album also includes songs very popular on the band's home island, Puerto Rico. "Noche De Ronda" and "Sabor A Mi," traditional boleros, are blended into a delightful medley. "Compadre Pedro Juan," a rousing merengue, is one of the band's most requested numbers.
  • The Navy Steel Band further demonstrates its versatility in the "steel" arrangements of five recent popular songs. Mason Williams' 1968 Grammy Award winning "Classical Gas" is a test in meters - 3/4, 4/4, 5/4 and 6/4. The drums lend a pleasantly different sound to a Simon and Garfunkel medley, "Sound of Silence/Scarbororough Fair/Mrs. Robinson."
  • Because the drums are tune to A-440 they are compatible with normal instruments, as the band demonstrates with a "rock" beat backing a flute solo by Calvin Stuart in their rendition of "It Was a Very Good Year."
  • Johann Sebastian Bach's "Fugue in G minor," Handel's "Aria from Semele," and "Cha Cha King" from Grieg's 'The Hall of the Mountain King' make up the classical selections.
  • The Puerto Rico Council, U.S. Navy League is pleased to share this unique musical experience with you. We hope you enjoy this touch of the Caribbean... enjoy the United States Navy Steel Band... Blowin' in the Wind.
