Ulcerate - Vermis

Ulcerate's fourth studio album, Vermis, is a tour de force of technical death metal. The New Zealand-based band's sound is characterized by intricate, dissonant guitar riffs, pummeling drums, and guttural vocals that combine to create an oppressive, suffocating atmosphere.
From the opening notes of "Odium," Vermis is an unrelenting onslaught of sound that rarely lets up. The album's tracks are densely layered and complex, with each instrument vying for attention in a sonic maelstrom. Yet, despite its technicality, Vermis never feels overly showy or indulgent. Ulcerate's musicianship is always in service of the song, and the album's tracks are tightly constructed and purposeful.
Standout tracks on Vermis include "Confronting Entropy," with its haunting opening guitar line and thunderous climax, and "Weight of Emptiness," which features some of the album's most memorable riffs. The album's centerpiece, the nearly 12-minute "Await Rescission," is a masterclass in atmosphere-building. The track slowly builds in intensity, with layers of dissonant guitar riffs and atmospheric synths creating an overwhelming sense of dread.
