The Selecter - Whip Them Down

Review by Paul perkes

Selecter's album Whip Them Down is a powerful and socially conscious release that showcases the band's signature blend of ska and punk. The album features hard-hitting tracks that address issues such as police brutality, racism, and political corruption, with lyrics that are both thought-provoking and incendiary.

From the opening track "Frontline," which sets the tone for the album with its urgent horns and driving bassline, to the closing anthem "Justice," Whip Them Down is a relentless call to action. The band's tight musicianship and powerful vocals are on full display throughout, with standout performances on tracks such as "Big Man," "Racism," and "We Don't Need Them."

While the album's themes are heavy, Selecter still manages to infuse the music with a sense of joy and celebration. Tracks like "The Big Fella" and "Carry Go Bring Come" are irresistibly danceable, and serve as reminders that even in the face of oppression, there is still room for joy and community.
