RedSK hlo IZFERNOR - Battle for the Tympanic Membrane

Review by Nicole Mongillo

The album Battle for the Tympanic Membrane by RedSK hlo IZFERNOR is an intense and chaotic experience that pushes the limits of experimental music. The tracks are filled with abrasive noise, distorted vocals, and glitchy beats that create a disorienting and unsettling atmosphere.

Despite the harshness of the sound, there is a sense of purpose and direction in the music. Each track seems to be telling a story, albeit a very abstract and surreal one. The album's title suggests a battle, and indeed there is a sense of conflict and struggle throughout the music.

One of the standout tracks is "Carnival of the Absurd," which features a carnival-like melody that is quickly drowned out by a barrage of noise and screams. The track "The End of All Things" is also noteworthy for its haunting vocals and apocalyptic atmosphere.

Notes

  • Battle for the Tympanic Membrane [a 3-way split with RedSK, blahblahblah, and IZFERNOR] {Idea Conceived 2010 June 14th}
  • Notes: On the 14th of June, I sent Patrick of RedSK fame a message on MySpace. I wanted to make an official split, and I knew he was one of the best and most famous noise artists around. I offered to make it on my label, and he agreed. I also offered a spot on there for another artist who went by the name of ______, but his real noise name was mixedupmess. He gladly accepted. Soon after everyone agreed to make the split, I went to work on some songs. I managed to scrape together about nine minutes worth in a matter of days, most of which use a choppy styling where I shouted gibberish, cut it up, and added effects. This is where I first used keyboard and guitar, primarily on "Fallout in the Tympanic Membrane". "This is the last song I'm guna make today..." is entirely composed of me saying that line with different effects and chopped up. Due to lack of communication and lack of money, the split was officially released about 5 months later on the 1st of November. It's about thirty and a half minutes long, 50% of which being RedSK. 40 Copies were printed.

The Redsk project started as a solo outlet from Patrick Harsh based out of Sumpter Township, Michigan. Originally spelled RedSK, the project was focused on experimenting in fusion of many genres and styles, but mostly based in shit noise, field recordings, power electronics, glitch, garage punk, grind, harsh noise and musique-concrete/plunderphonics. Redsk has switched directions, style and focus since 2006 and is very good at leaving behind a very confusing discography. As a solo entity, its main objective and purpose was to serve as an outlet for Patricks schizophrenic frustrations and anxieties/rage/non-stop manic thought processes. In 2014 the project was put on temporary hiatus and neglect to pursue spiritual enlightenment and an attempt to block out various life-distractions. As of October 2014, the Redsk project is revived as a band with a revolving line-up or many different line-ups depending on city/state. There is no purpose in being any more specific about the sound or direction of this project as it develops and changes several times every year since its inception. Currently Redsk is based out of Detroit, Michigan and is mostly released through TRASHFUCK Records, a DIY label founded by Patrick and ran with a staff of close friends and non-blood family.
