Review by Jack Zucker

The album Schumann Cello Concerto In A Minor Tchaikovsky Variations On A Rococo Theme by Pierre Fournier Philharmonia Orchestra Sir Malcolm Sargent is a masterpiece of classical music that showcases the talent and virtuosity of some of the greatest musicians of all time.

Pierre Fournier's performance of Schumann's Cello Concerto in A Minor is nothing short of breathtaking. His technical mastery of the cello is evident in every note he plays, and his emotional depth and sensitivity bring out the full beauty and complexity of Schumann's composition.

The Philharmonia Orchestra, under the direction of Sir Malcolm Sargent, provides the perfect accompaniment to Fournier's cello, with lush, sweeping strings and crisp, precise brass and percussion. The orchestra's sound is rich and full, with a depth and warmth that perfectly complement Fournier's solo performance.

Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme is another highlight of this album, with Fournier and the Philharmonia Orchestra once again delivering a stunning performance. Fournier's cello soars and sings through the intricate variations, while the orchestra provides a rich and nuanced backdrop that highlights the beauty and complexity of Tchaikovsky's composition.

He became well known when he played with the Edouard Colonne Orchestra in 1925. He began touring all over Europe. He played with all the great musicians of the time, and recorded the complete chamber music of Brahms and Schubert for the BBC on acetates. However, these deteriorated before the recordings could be transferred to a more durable medium. Fournier taught at the École Normale de Musique in Paris and the Paris Conservatory from 1937 to 1949. He made his first tour of the United States in 1948 and played to great acclaim in New York and Boston. From 1956 on, he made his home in Switzerland, although he never relinquished his French citizenship. In 1963, he was made a member of the French Legion of Honor. He continued performing until two years before his death at the age of 79. He also continued to teach privately at his home in Geneva: the British cellist Julian Lloyd Webber was among his pupils. His son Jean-Pierre became a pianist performing under the name of .
