Pat Benatar - Tropico

pcorbanese

Review by Peilin Corbanese

Tropico, the fifth studio album by Pat Benatar, is a vibrant and eclectic collection of songs that showcase the singer's versatility as an artist. Released in 1984, the album features a range of styles, from the driving rock of "Painted Desert" to the sultry, Latin-tinged "Ooh Ooh Song."

One of the standout tracks on the album is "We Belong," a soaring ballad that became a chart-topping hit for Benatar. With its lush production and heartfelt lyrics, the song remains a fan favorite to this day.

Another standout track is "Lipstick Lies," a funky, guitar-driven tune that showcases Benatar's rock 'n' roll roots. The song's catchy chorus and infectious groove make it a standout on the album.

Summary by Peilin Corbanese

Tropico is a strong entry in Pat Benatar's catalog, showcasing her range as a singer and songwriter. Whether she's belting out a powerful rock anthem or delivering a tender ballad, Benatar proves herself to be one of the most dynamic and compelling artists of her era.

Comments

Pat Benatar's shelf life had expired by now. It had already started to fade two years earlier in the public eye with Get Nervous, was rejuvenated temporarily with the single "Love is a Battlefield" tacked on the end of her live set Live From Earth in '83. Fast forward a year, and here we have "We Belong" making some noise, but not much else. There were other undercurrents that must have contributed to Benatar's demise from stardom, and one has to think that Madonna's emergence in '83 had some bearing on it. Indeed, why rush out "Battlefield" a year earlier before a true album was ready? And yet oddly Tropico is what I would consider Benatar's most interesting album, for one main reason - it works as an overall mood piece, and sounds even better as a composite. We find a more reflective Benatar on Tropico, and the public possibly didn't know what to think of it, especially with Madonna as the new diva queen. Benatar is certainly heavy on the ballads, with rock elements interspersed, and she's never sounded more versatile. Tropico spans a wide landscape and shows Benatar and Neil Giraldo spreading their creative wings. In addition to the ubiquitous "We Belong", "Temporary Heroes" is a mature approach at melodic rock, though again since it isn't out-of-the-box radio friendly it had little chance of making much of a splash. "The Ooh Ooh Song" is a rather jaunty ride, and it should've gotten more love. The song holds up even today, oddly as more of a nod to fifties rock. Perhaps it would have struck more of a nerve with a less banal title, who knows. At any rate, it's a straight-ahead rock piece that has aged extremely well. Meanwhile, "A Crazy World Like This" is another solid rocker. That's four heavy hitters on one disc, along with the pleasant tones of "Painted Desert", "Outlaw Blues" and "Takin' it Back". That's a lot more than you get on most albums.Tropico probably wasn't meant for the '80s, though I would count that in the duo's favor for sticking their necks out and making something intelligent even if it meant it would suffer on the charts past the obvious single. Truth is, no other female rock diva could make an album the way Pat Benatar could. If the public isn't paying attention and a record falls in the forest, was it still good? Critics might say it depends on if you ask Kierkegaard or Spinoza.
Good song. It was on a Miami Vice episode.
Pat Benatar is a fantastic songstress. She is the sought of woman I could easily fall in love with.

Spectacular. Madonna was talented, but Pat and company are in another category.
My absolute favourite of all of Pat and Neil's songs. Beautiful, ethereal, strikingly tragic - showing all the deep, hard beauty of love. Tragedy with bliss. Ageless.

And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:15)
And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name. (Revelation14:9-11)
