Armchair Anarchist, the third studio album by British rock band Kingmaker, is a raw and politically charged record that encapsulates the band's punk spirit and social commentary. Released in 1994, the album features ten tracks that range from upbeat and catchy to slow and brooding, all while maintaining a consistent theme of rebellion and anti-establishment sentiment.
The album's opener, "Ten Years Asleep," sets the tone with its driving guitar riffs and frontman Loz Hardy's sneering vocals. The title track, "Armchair Anarchist," is a standout with its infectious chorus and biting lyrics about the hypocrisy of armchair activists. "Stay Asleep" and "Bitter End" showcase the band's ability to slow things down without losing any of their intensity.
Throughout the album, Kingmaker's musicianship is impressive, with intricate guitar work and tight rhythm sections. The production, handled by the band themselves, is rough around the edges but adds to the overall punk aesthetic of the record.
Armchair Anarchist is not without its flaws, however. Some tracks, such as "No Thanks," feel repetitive and lack the same energy as others. Additionally, the album's political message may not resonate with all listeners.
