Drag, the sixth studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter kd lang, released in 1997, is a bold and daring departure from her earlier work. The album features lang's interpretations of classic songs from the American Songbook, with a twist - all the songs are sung from the perspective of a man.
The album opens with a stunning rendition of "Don't Smoke in Bed," with lang's deep, rich voice perfectly capturing the melancholic tone of the song. She follows it up with a soulful version of "The Air That I Breathe," which showcases her impressive range and emotional depth.
Lang's interpretation of "Smoke Dreams" is a standout track, with her sultry vocals perfectly capturing the longing and heartbreak of the song. "Don't Let the Stars Get in Your Eyes" is another highlight, with lang's smooth and velvety voice effortlessly gliding over the jazzy instrumentation.

k.d. lang's Ingenue was without question a masterpiece and the records defining song "Constant Craving" about desire and longing has lost none of its luster. lang's next two albums, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, and All You Can Eat featured some exceptional tracks including "Lifted by Love," and "If I Were You" but neither release received the kind of praise Ingenue earned. Two years later, lang issued an inspired all-covers tribute to smoking and other harmful dependencies like toxic relationships called Drag. The opener, "Don't Smoke in Bed" sounds nothing like Peggy Lee's droll 1948 version. Lee's popular rendition of the classic seemed like a humorous break off song focusing on the fact that "old sleepy head" was a smoker meaning there was more than just one butt on the bed. lang's poignant Blue Velvet neo-noir like take on the standard hints at something sinister found in the song's lyrics, ("I'm packing you in like I said") making it seem more than just about betrayal and deception. Although The Hollies' "The Air That I Breathe" does mention cigarettes in passing, it's really a gorgeous love song more than an ode to smoking, and lang's stunning interpretation will leave you breathless. The irresistible "Smoke Dreams" is so ultra-smooth it'll make you want to reach for a Marlboro while the country-tinged "My Last Cigarette" is remarkably moving with profound lyrics ("Sometimes the people you love in the night/The morning will choose to forget") about habits that aren't easy to break. lang's impressive revamp of Steve Miller's "The Joker" about "a midnight toker" is a real pleasure that even Miller, the gangster of love himself could enjoy. The achingly beautiful "Theme from the Valley of the Dolls" made famous by Dionne Warwick in the late sixties is only one of two songs along with "Till the Heart Caves In" from Drag that doesn't mention addiction, cigarettes, smoke or smoking. The jazzy "Hain't It Funny?" written by underappreciated Canadian singer-songwriter Jane Siberry features a haunting, gorgeously understated trumpet solo by Jon Hassell. The final track "Love Is Like a Cigarette" summarizes Drag perfectly with the following lines: "Love seems to fade away and leave behind ashes of regret/And with a flick of your fingertips/It was easy for you to forget."

This is the first album of hers I bought. Love it! What voice this lady has. Her cover of "Hallelujah" is the best ever, better than Leonard Cohen's original version (apologies to Mr. Cohen.)
Her voice melt in my ears..... perfect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She does more with her voice in this one song than some singers do in their whole careers. People who only have listened to "Crying" and "Hallelujah" where her power is on display should hear this for the sheer subtlety and beauty of what she can do in a torch song such as this. Every shading of tone, every pulse of vibrato is under perfect control, seemingly effortless and full of wistful emotion.

Great cover. Would love to hear Ms Lang cover more Boo Hewerdine compositions, the languid nature of her voice matches this song beautifully, and Boo's work is so distinctive (and brilliant too, one of the world's most under-rated songwriters).
