Review by Kenneth Vega

JS Bach's Two Part Inventions BWV 772a 786 Three Part Inventions BWV 787 801, as performed by András Schiff, is a stunning collection of keyboard music that showcases the composer's mastery of counterpoint and harmony. Schiff's sensitive and nuanced playing brings out the intricate polyphonic textures of Bach's music, making each voice and line clear and distinct.

The Two Part Inventions, which were originally written as teaching pieces, are presented here with a sense of depth and musicality that goes beyond their pedagogical function. Schiff brings out the playful spirit of pieces like Invention No. 8 in F Major, while also highlighting the expressive lyricism of pieces like Invention No. 13 in A Minor.

The Three Part Inventions, also known as Sinfonias, are more complex and ambitious works that showcase Bach's ability to create complex musical structures that are at once intellectually stimulating and emotionally satisfying. Schiff's interpretation of these pieces is masterful, bringing out the intricate interplay between the three voices and highlighting the emotional range of each piece.

About JS Bach András Schiff

Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21, 1685 in Eisenach, Thuringia, Germany. A prolific German composer and organist, his sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra and solo instruments drew together the strands of the baroque genre and brought it to its ultimate maturity. Although he introduced no new forms, he enriched the prevailing German style with a robust contrapuntal technique, a control of harmonic and motivic organisation from the smallest to the largest scales, and the adaptation of rhythms and textures from abroad, particularly Italy and France. Many people consider him to be the greatest Baroque composer, and one of the greatest composers of all time. Revered for their intellectual depth, technical command and artistic beauty, J.S. Bach's works include the Brandenburg concertos, the keyboard suites and partitas, the Mass in B Minor, the St. Matthew Passion, The Musical Offering, The Art of Fugue and a large number of cantatas, of which about 220 survive. He died on July 28, 1750. Some of his sons also became composers - , , and .
