Review by Adam Cunnington

The album JS Bach Suite N by Johann Sebastian Bach, performed by The Academy of St MartinintheFields and conducted by Sir Neville Marriner, is a masterpiece of Baroque music. The album features six suites, each consisting of various dances, and showcases the virtuosity of the orchestra.

The first suite, in C major, is lively and upbeat, with the flute and strings taking turns to lead the melodies. The second suite, in B minor, is more melancholic, with the oboe and bassoon adding depth to the harmonies. The third suite, in D major, is perhaps the most famous, featuring the famous Air on the G String, a slow and haunting piece that is instantly recognizable.

The fourth suite, in E-flat major, is cheerful and playful, with the trumpets and drums adding a festive touch. The fifth suite, in C minor, is more dramatic and intense, with the cellos and basses providing a rich and powerful sound. The final suite, in D major, is a joyful and triumphant conclusion to the album, with the whole orchestra coming together in a grand finale.

About Johann Sebastian Bach, The Academy Of St MartinintheFields, Sir Neville Marriner

Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21, 1685 in Eisenach, Thuringia, Germany. A prolific German composer and organist, his sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra and solo instruments drew together the strands of the baroque genre and brought it to its ultimate maturity. Although he introduced no new forms, he enriched the prevailing German style with a robust contrapuntal technique, a control of harmonic and motivic organisation from the smallest to the largest scales, and the adaptation of rhythms and textures from abroad, particularly Italy and France. Many people consider him to be the greatest Baroque composer, and one of the greatest composers of all time. Revered for their intellectual depth, technical command and artistic beauty, J.S. Bach's works include the Brandenburg concertos, the keyboard suites and partitas, the Mass in B Minor, the St. Matthew Passion, The Musical Offering, The Art of Fugue and a large number of cantatas, of which about 220 survive. He died on July 28, 1750. Some of his sons also became composers - , , and .
