Review by David Burrow

The Midgets, the 1956 album by Joe Newman Septet, is a wonderful addition to any jazz lover's collection. The album features Newman on trumpet, along with a talented group of musicians including Frank Wess on tenor saxophone and flute, and Hank Jones on piano.

The album opens with the upbeat and swinging "Midgets," which showcases Newman's virtuosic trumpet playing. The album continues with a mix of original compositions and standards, including a beautiful rendition of "What's New?" featuring Wess on flute.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Jive at Five," a bluesy number featuring Newman and Wess trading solos over a driving rhythm section. The album ends with "Midgets Take Charge," a fast-paced and energetic tune that leaves the listener wanting more.
