Review by Ivarie Pearce

The album Brandenburgische Konzerte by J S Bach, performed by the Akademie Für Alte Musik Berlin, is a stunning collection of six concertos that showcase the composer's exceptional skill and creativity. The orchestra's performance is masterful, demonstrating a deep understanding of the Baroque era and Bach's musical style.

The opening concerto, BWV 1046, is a vibrant and energetic piece that sets the tone for the entire album. The orchestra's precision and attention to detail are apparent in each movement, from the intricate solo passages to the lively dance rhythms. The second concerto, BWV 1047, features a prominent trumpet solo that is executed flawlessly by the orchestra's principal trumpeter.

Throughout the album, the Akademie Für Alte Musik Berlin demonstrates a remarkable ability to convey the emotional depth and complexity of Bach's music. The slower movements, such as the adagio from BWV 1050, are hauntingly beautiful, while the faster movements, such as the allegro from BWV 1051, are thrilling and exhilarating.

About J S Bach, Akademie Für Alte Musik Berlin

Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21, 1685 in Eisenach, Thuringia, Germany. A prolific German composer and organist, his sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra and solo instruments drew together the strands of the baroque genre and brought it to its ultimate maturity. Although he introduced no new forms, he enriched the prevailing German style with a robust contrapuntal technique, a control of harmonic and motivic organisation from the smallest to the largest scales, and the adaptation of rhythms and textures from abroad, particularly Italy and France. Many people consider him to be the greatest Baroque composer, and one of the greatest composers of all time. Revered for their intellectual depth, technical command and artistic beauty, J.S. Bach's works include the Brandenburg concertos, the keyboard suites and partitas, the Mass in B Minor, the St. Matthew Passion, The Musical Offering, The Art of Fugue and a large number of cantatas, of which about 220 survive. He died on July 28, 1750. Some of his sons also became composers - , , and .
