Review by Bruno Sampaio

The album "1658 Henry Purcell 1695" by Henry Purcell, The Early Music Foundation, Michael Hauptmann, and Ruth KischArndt is a wonderful collection of Purcell's music. The album features some of Purcell's most famous works, including "Dido and Aeneas" and "The Fairy Queen," as well as some lesser-known pieces. The performances on the album are outstanding, with Hauptmann and KischArndt bringing a great deal of passion and skill to their interpretations of Purcell's music. The sound quality is excellent, with each instrument and voice coming through clearly. "1658 Henry Purcell 1695" is a must-have for any fan of early music or Purcell's work.

Notes

The proper title of "Saul and the Witch at Endor is "In guilty night;" it, and "My song shall be alway [of the loving kindness of the Lord]" were both initially published in Playford's "Harmonia Sacra" . "Bess of Bedlam" initially appeared in "Orpheus Britannicus" . The frontispiece of the 1706 edition of "Orpheus Britannicus" is reproduced on the left half of the front cover of this album. This album was probably the first full-length LP devoted to the music of Henry Purcell. Ruth Kisch-Arndt is credited as the director of the Early Music Foundation itself; this organization has no relationship to the Early Music Foundation established by Frederick Renz in 1974. In the credits on the back cover underneath the titles, Kisch-Armdt's name is misspelled "Ruth Kisch-Arntd."
