Comments

If anyone can be considered the father of modal music, it is George Russell, whose musical theories would inspire the revolutionary albums by Miles Davis and Gil Evans which brought the new approach to the world at large. On New York, N.Y., Russell leads a large band of forward-thinking jazzmen through arrangements of mostly standards circling around the theme of New York's metropolitan culture while Jon Hendricks narrates with simple but engaging poetry. Russell's arrangements and the soloing of the outstanding talents he assembled resulted is an interesting album full of life, diversity, and sound, not unlike the city he sought to capture on wax.
