Elton John's 4-disc box set To Be Continued... was released in November of 1990, and it remains the definitive overview of the great singer-songwriter's finest work from 1965 to 1990. Disc 1 begins with "Come Back Baby," one his earliest efforts with British blues group, Bluesology. The beautiful, intimate, much-loved ballad "Your Song" became a huge breakthrough hit for John in 1970 and has since become an instantly recognizable standard that's been covered by Lady Gaga, Ellie Goulding, Rod Stewart, The Streets, Three Dog Night, and many others. Other highlights from Disc 1 include the fun, energetic "Take Me to the Pilot;" the gospel-tinged "Border Song;" the intense "Sixty Years On;" the lesser-known original honky-tonk version of "Grey Seal;" "Levon," featuring one of John's strongest vocal performances; the timeless, undisputed classic "Tiny Dancer," now forever associated with Cameron Crowe's film Almost Famous; the ambitious "Madman Across the Water;" the playful "Honky Cat;" and the dazzling, powerful "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters." Disc 2 kicks off with one of Elton's most iconic, enduring hits "Rocket Man." Bernie Taupin's absorbing lyrics are a particular standout and really capture the underlying sadness of being so far away from home and alone in space. Disc 2's other highlights include the touching, understated ballad "Daniel," and the terrific up-tempo rocker "Crocodile Rock" both from the 1973 album, Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player; the soulful piano-driven epic "Bennie and the Jets;" the gorgeous "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road;" the innovative, stunning "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding;" the inspired raucous rocker "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" with Elton's killer Jerry Lee Lewis-like piano playing; the festive "Step into Christmas;" the racy "The Bitch Is Back;" the revelatory, unforgettable cover of The Who's "Pinball Wizard;" and the poignant "Someone Saved My Life Tonight." Disc 3 opens with "Philadelphia Freedom," John's ode to tennis legend Billie Jean King, which predates the Seventies Philadelphia soul found on David Bowie's Young Americans LP by about a month.Other highlights from Disc 3 include the upbeat "Island Girl" from the album Rock of the Westies; the gentle, somber ballad "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word;" the wonderful Motown inspired duet with Kiki Dee "Don't Go Breaking My Heart;" and the melancholy "Blue Eyes." Disc 4 starts off with Elton's moving tribute to John Lennon "Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny)." Disc 4's other highlights include "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues" with the legendary Stevie Wonder on harmonica; the enduring eighties comeback hit "I'm Still Standing;" the catchy "Sad Songs (Say So Much)" the only worthwhile cut from Elton John's 1984 record, Breaking Hearts; "Act of War," a duet with Millie Jackson; a live version of the haunting "Candle in the Wind;" and the sublime "Sacrifice."
