C Cat Trance's self-titled album is a captivating blend of post-punk, world music, and hypnotic rhythms. Released in 1984, the album showcases the band's unique sound, which is characterized by the use of exotic instruments such as the sitar and the African kalimba, as well as the hypnotic vocals of lead singer Ben Ayres.
The album's opening track, "Shake the Mind," sets the tone for the rest of the album with its driving beat and Ayres' otherworldly vocals. "Sudaniyya" and "Screaming Fist" showcase the band's world music influences, with the former featuring a mesmerizing sitar riff and the latter incorporating African percussion.
Tracks like "Rattling Ghosts" and "She Steals Cars" demonstrate the band's experimental side, with the former featuring eerie synth sounds and the latter incorporating a spoken-word section. The album's closing track, "Tropical Hot Dog Night," is a cover of a Captain Beefheart song and showcases the band's ability to take a classic song and make it their own.
