The final track from The Boss’s massive CD BORN IN THE USA is also one of his best: MY HOMETOWN. It’s something he passes on over to his son, telling him to TAKE A GOOD LOOK AROUND…THIS IS YOUR HOMETOWN. It peaked at #7 on Billboard in JANUARY 1986.

My mom still lives in my hometown and I go visit her once a month and I just love hearing this song everytime I'm visiting. But on the day I have to drive back to where I live now it is always so hard to leave my mom and my hometown ?.
Yeah everyone comes from somewheres I reckon.
Depressing how much my hometown has become a wasteland. "Nothing you could do". You just have to watch things pass, as standing on the tracks in front of the freight train of progress is fruitless. Full circle when your kids discover the same things you did at their age. Sometimes, think the Lord has granted me enough time to accurately assess reconciling my memories with what I see now and coming in the future. Like standing in the same spot, as in the novel, "The Time Machine" and witnessing times past, seeing the landscapes and people come and go. Just to witness what was, and what has become reality. Seeing those who were part of the past, pass away, knowing the part that they played and how the past was shaped by those people, and now how the present and future is shaped by my generation and seeing how my kids could shape the future and what the present is doing to them and all the "stuff" that they will be burdened with to fix or give up. It's interesting and depressing how folks of a younger generation throw away the common sense of the past and now have to learn, or relearn those same lessons, and somehow think they invented it. Humans certainly don't learn enough from the past, and discard some of the most valuable lessons without the slightest consideration of their value.
This song captures (for me at least), some of the true greatness, of parenting and of learning and presenting the raw reality of how things progress, and how we have to survive, and try to pass on those skills to our kids. If "they" understand the same "reality" we know, they, hopefully will be able to change directions and avoid what we couldn't or didn't know how to. Of "Giants" and Older "Giants".
One thing stands out as a beacon, is when your kids ask for your wisdom, and you show it to them, and they see demonstrated the value of what you've done and brought to the table. Even though they have surpassed your prosperity, and have had to learn on their own, they see where they've come from and seem to cherish their heritage, and carry a chunk of it, into their own and their children. Something valuable is passed on, as the next generation does realize that "they" as well as "I" stand and stood on the shoulders of those mentors and giants, so I could see into the future. Those "giants" who stood, supporting me, in my own disbelief and had the patience to stand and support "me" long enough for me to pass on their wisdom, as I have done for my kids. And hopefully, someday "they" will become the "giants" who will stand long enough for their kids to see far enough into the future.
Bruce Springsteen. This is my Home Town. Is Kentucky. You Did A Great Job On My Hometown.
When You Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band. Come
We Would Sing That Song On Stage. To Kentucky! Thanks Bruce!
As a songwriter myself, if ever I am judging a song, respectfully of course, I always consider the Bridge. Was it necessary? Was it just a "filler"? Did it actually Add to the song? To put it simply...this is one of the Finest bridges in any popular modern day song. In my humble opinion. ?

A universal poem to home towns around the world....mine was a small town in Denmark, where on summer days I would be on my swing in our garden with a cassette deck and headphones, listening to great 50-60-70s music. The world felt friendly then, my heart was unafraid, and there was love. I look back across the decades and sometimes put on the same old mix tapes and recall how good the beginning was. The house is still standing, and so are my memories.
this song remember of my city waterford the oldest city in irealnd. where unemployment is high.
Can relate to this in today's world.
I was eight years old
And running with a dime in my hand
To the bus stop to pick
Up a paper for my old man
I'd sit on his lap in that big old Buick
And steer as we drove through town
He'd tousle my hair
And say, "son, take a good look around"
This is your hometown
This is your hometown
This is your hometown
This is your hometown"
In '65 tension was running high
At my high school
There was a lot of fights
Between the black and white
There was nothing you could do
Two cars at a light on a Saturday night
In the back seat there was a gun
Words were passed in a shotgun blast
Troubled times had come
To my hometown
To my hometown
To my hometown
To my hometown
Now Main Street's whitewashed windows
And vacant stores
Seems like there ain't nobody
Wants to come down here no more
They're closing down the textile mill
Across the railroad tracks
Foreman says, "these jobs are going, boys
And they ain't coming back
To your hometown
To your hometown
To your hometown
To your hometown"
Last night me and Kate we laid in bed
Talking about getting out
Packing up our bags, maybe heading south
I'm thirty-five, we got a boy of our own now
Last night I sat him up behind the wheel
And said, "son, take a good look around
This is your hometown"
Yes Bruce, everyone has a hometown, sometimes for some economic reasons you left hometown & you can’t go back there, but the hometown is root for nobody to forget! Merci mon Ami j’aime votre chanson!
Springsteen started out playing at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ. When I was in college in the mid 1980's my friends and I drove to Asbury Park to watch the sunrise (another story in and of itself). Asbury Park then looked a lot like what he sings about in this song.
I'm not particularly a Springsteen fan, but this song is a small masterpiece. It brings me to tears just listening to it.
It is a good song
