Bob Seger - Fire Lake

Review by S Budd

Bob Seger's album, Fire Lake, is a classic rock masterpiece that showcases his incredible talent and ability to craft timeless tunes. The album is a perfect blend of Seger's signature sound and a more experimental approach, resulting in a collection of songs that are both familiar and fresh.

The title track, Fire Lake, is a standout song that captures the essence of Seger's music. The song's lyrics are a powerful reflection on the fleeting nature of life, and the need to seize every opportunity that comes our way. The track's upbeat tempo and catchy melody make it an instant classic that will have listeners tapping their feet and singing along.

Another standout track on the album is Shame on the Moon, a hauntingly beautiful ballad that showcases Seger's vocal range and emotional depth. The song's lyrics are a poignant reflection on the human condition and the struggles we all face in life.

Kick ass
Let's all go ⬇️????
One of the best hard rock songs I've ever heard.
Can't find ANY entry in "Song lyrics meanings" for this tune. (they have the lyrics-but no contributions.) SO...is a "cigar sometimes a cigar" and a "train sometimes a train" as Freud said??
Listen: I live in the Detroit area, and saw him once live a few years ago. Decent white blues man, but the critics panned "Against the Wind." Rolling Stone called it "cowardly" and said it invalidated his breakthrough "Stranger in Town." Shame that at least two of his backup session guys are no longer with us (the rhythm section, not the Silver Bullet Band.)
Well the big train keeps on rolling
Rolling on down the track
And the way she's moving buddy
I don't believe she's a-coming back

The fireman's smoking a big cigar
Sipping Lafite Rothschild Bordeaux
And the engineer's so happy
He's just a-letting that whistle blow

She keeps a-rolling
She keeps a-rolling
She keeps a-rolling on proud and fine
She keeps a-rolling
She keeps a-rolling
Down that long twin silver line

Well she just blazed through Chicago
Nonstop to L.A.
And the way she's steaming buddy
You better not get in her way
She's got the finest fastest pulling twin diesels
She's got ninety three cars in tow
She's gonna be on time
All the way down the line
Come the rain hail sleet or snow

She keeps a-rolling
She keeps a-rolling
She keeps a-rolling on right on time
She keeps a-rolling
She keeps a-rolling
Down that long twin silver line
Rolling on down the line
And she just passed in Chicago
Rolling into Kansas too
Rolling into Denver
Doing all she'll do
And she hangs a big left in Salt Lake City

Southwest to the Nevada line
Rolling into California
Right on time
Rolling on down the line
Someone on youtube made a video of this song featuring multiple types of trains. Sheldon would be proud. Remember that this song (and "against the wind") came out in 1980. Looking at that video (it doesn't allow comments) I see the irony of the incipient recession and the Reagan administration. The modern intermodal train (with five locomotives!) probably has a bunch of goods from China and Japan. An old muscle car (?Dodge Dart) was shown at a railroad crossing-and those were gone from the early 1970s until their recent resurrection. The Fireman drinking Rothschild Bordeaux is a rip on the Unions (firemen were kept on for awhile in some capacity-no coal has been shoveled into locomotives for many moons, of course.) Unions...they were in the process of getting royally screwed-and their members ending up burger flippers.
Bob's as American as a cheeseburger. Nothing fancy, just straight ahead rock n roll. Just rollin on down the line...TK STRUSKA
Never understood why this wasn't a single release------------------awesome rock !! --------------------------WolfSky9
Bob's rail geography is a bit off: Going from Chicago to Los Angeles by "hanging a big left in Salt Lake City, Southwest to the Nevada line" means taking the fast Union Pacific mainline route, which does not go through Kansas, nor Denver. You could go through all these places on your way from Chicago to LA, but it would be very inefficient (mileage-wise) and mountainous/slow (Denver to SLC).
Had this on vinyl
