Review by Mokona Modoki

Abilene's self-titled album is a refreshing take on traditional country music. The band's unique blend of classic country instrumentation and modern sensibilities creates a sound that feels both nostalgic and contemporary.

From the opening track, "Hey Boy," the album sets a tone of authenticity and sincerity. Lead vocalist Amanda Fields's voice is a standout feature of the record, with a twang and range that effortlessly carries the emotion of each song.

The album's lyrics are introspective and personal, exploring themes of love, loss, and self-discovery. "Cry Baby Cry" is a standout track that showcases the band's ability to tell a story through their music.

The production on Abilene is clean and polished, allowing the instrumentation to shine. The pedal steel guitar and fiddle are particularly noteworthy, adding depth and texture to the songs.

About Abilene

Abilene was a Chicago-based indie rock/post rock band formed at the end of the 1990's by Alex Dumham, (vocals/guitar, ex-Hoover, ex-Regulator Watts), Craig Ackerman (bass/vocals, ex-Lustre King, ex-Gainer), and Scott Adamson (drums, ex-Chisel Drill Hammer). They released their first album, a six-song, self-titled affair, in 2000. Dunham's former Hoover bandmate, Fred Erskine (trumpet, ex-Crownhate Ruin, ex-June Of 44) joined the band by the time they recorded their second, and last, album, "Two Guns, Twin Arrows".
