ABC is a British pop band from Sheffield, UK, formed in 1980, best known for songs like The Look of Love and When Smokey Sings in the 1980s. Since 1997, ABC has been the solo project of singer and founder Martin Fry, who works with a variety of musicians. White and Singleton started out as , who released an EP "" in 1979 and contributed the track "Genetic Warfare" to a compilation, "" before adding Fry to the lineup and mutating into ABC. During the late '70s, Fry ran his own fanzine, Modern Drugs, while he attended Sheffield University. ABC formed in 1980, after Fry interviewed Vice Versa members Mark White (guitar) and Stephen Singleton (saxophone) for his fanzine. The two musicians asked Fry to join their band as a vocalist, and he soon became part of the group; the lineup also featured drummer David Robinson and bassist Mark Lickley. Soon, Fry had taken control of the electronic band, he recruited as producer to steer them in a more pop-oriented direction and renamed the group ABC. By the fall of 1981, the band had signed a record contract with Phonogram Records, which agreed to distribute ABC's own label, Neutron. ABC released their first single, "Tears Are Not Enough," in November; it peaked at number 19 on the U.K. charts.

The two seconds from 1:40 to 1:42 gives me chills. First the cut to Martin Fry and then the cut to Mark White. Oh yeah!

Much debate over the original album track & this Blackbox remix. Though I enjoy both in equal measure, this mix does the song a thumping lift...without it, I don't think we would have had such an imaginative video in all its technicolour glory for us to enjoy!!

Album version is much better as other have said. This feels rushed and more emphasis on the horns which even at the time was slightly cheesy. The melodic part combines with the rhythm guitar was great. Also drums arent as pronounced....still have the cd5

I remember this song from back when I was in the 5th Grade and when New Jack Swing was AWESOME in the Early 90's

I also heard the remix version on Bayou 104 KBIU 103.7 Lake Charles, LA

This song was also the last chart song in America as the song was #3 on the American Dance Chart

Plus, Michael Jordan RULED the NBA on NBC and Judge Wapner once again RULED The People's Court

The album version was and still is the best version. Black Box helped in producing the original and also did the remixed version (which isn't that great).

I agree the album is great and I love it still to this day. I like the Black Box remix that's at the end of the cd with the accapella vocals before music kicks in. Regardless if we agree or not about this mix....we can agree that the album was excellent! Take care....David

dude, you must be smoking some serious crack!!!!!!!! the album version is a million times better than this lame video version. By the way, "Abracadabra" was an excellent album with some great soulful songs.

Ken I first saw you when I was 18, I purchased my first Robert Mapplethorpe book at the Guggenheim gift shop. 1990... I never knew you were in an abc video as well until now, and a clip made the year after at that! lol. One of my fave groups of all tim I had just never caught this particular clip of theirs!!! You are so fortunate to have lived a life were you worked amazing people. Great finding your little youtube channel. Thank you for sharing! Your images are among Mapplethorpes best. xo
