Review by isya ansori

Yusef Lateef's album "La Flauta de Oro" is a gem that showcases the masterful flute playing of the jazz legend. The album, released in 1957, features Lateef's unique blend of jazz and Middle Eastern music, creating a hypnotic and exotic sound that is both enchanting and captivating.

The album opens with the title track, "La Flauta de Oro," a beautiful and intricate piece that highlights Lateef's virtuosity on the flute. The track features a haunting melody that is accentuated by the subtle use of percussion and strings, creating a dreamy and otherworldly atmosphere.

The album also features several other standout tracks, including "Love Theme from Spartacus" and "Blues for the Orient," both of which showcase Lateef's ability to seamlessly blend different musical styles and influences. "Love Theme from Spartacus" is a slow and romantic ballad that is infused with Middle Eastern tonalities, while "Blues for the Orient" is a lively and upbeat tune that features Lateef's saxophone playing.

Lateef was a jazz multi-instrumentalist, composer and prominent figure among the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in America, following his conversion to Islam in 1950. Although Lateef's main instruments were the tenor saxophone and flute, he also played oboe and bassoon, both rare in jazz, and also used a number of non-western instruments such as the bamboo flute, shanai, shofar, xun, arghul and koto. Lateef had an inquisitive spirit and was never just a bop or hard bop soloist. He did not care much for the term "jazz
