Review by Jessie Lucyszyn

The Walt Dickerson Quartet's album Death And Taxes is a jazz masterpiece that showcases the group's exceptional musicality and improvisational skills. The album features a mix of original compositions and classic jazz standards, all played with a unique and innovative approach.

The quartet, led by vibraphonist Walt Dickerson, delivers a cohesive and dynamic performance throughout the album. The rhythm section, consisting of bassist Andrew Cyrille and drummer Edgar Bateman, provides a solid foundation for the group's exploratory sound. Pianist Bob Neloms adds a layer of complexity to the arrangements, with his intricate playing complementing Dickerson's vibraphone lines.

The album opens with the hauntingly beautiful "Death and Taxes," a melancholic piece that sets the tone for the rest of the album. From there, the group moves seamlessly between upbeat tracks like "The Cry" and more introspective pieces like "The Soul Maker."

One of the highlights of the album is the quartet's rendition of Thelonious Monk's "Blue Monk." The group's interpretation of the classic tune is fresh and exciting, with Dickerson's vibraphone taking center stage.

Comments

This is lush and it swings too. A treat for the ears.
First heard this in the 1960s on a Ed Beech radio program out of NYC. Have not it heard it since until today. Love it.
Just discovered Walt and love his playing. Check out his composition "A Sense of Direction" . He sounds so much like the great Johnny Lytle. I'm loving it!  Great groove music.
